Day 4
The Baptism and Temptations
Identity tested in the desert

c. 1609
Grace to ask for
Lord, grant me the grace to know who I am in You — so that I am not shaken by what the world offers.
"And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.""
Matthew 3:17
Composition of Place
Stand at the Jordan. See Jesus wade into the water. See the Spirit descend. Hear the voice of the Father. Then follow him into the desert.
Points for Meditation
The voice before the desert
Notice the order: the Father's declaration of love and delight comes before the desert, not after. Jesus did not earn the Father's pleasure through the forty days of temptation. He was loved before he was tested. So are you. The desert does not produce the belovedness — it reveals what the belovedness can bear.
The three temptations
Turn stones to bread — use Your power to satisfy Your needs. Throw yourself down from the temple — use Your power to compel belief. Bow to me and receive all kingdoms — use Your power to dominate. Each temptation is a distortion of real goods: food, faith, authority. The temptation is not to choose evil, but to pursue good in ways that bypass the Father's way.
The answer is always Scripture
Jesus answers every temptation with the word of God. Not with argument, not with power, not with contempt — with Scripture. He knew the word of God so thoroughly that it was his first response when everything else was stripped away. What comes out of you when you are under pressure?
Colloquy
Ask Jesus to form your identity in God's love — not in performance, not in achievement, not in others' approval. Ask for the word of God to become so native to you that it surfaces automatically when you are tested.
Remain in silence for a few minutes.
Do not rush to the next exercise.
