    Exercises/Week Two/The Hidden Life

    Day 3

    The Hidden Life

    Thirty years of ordinary faithfulness

    Grace to ask for

Lord, sanctify my ordinary life — let me find You in the unremarkable.

"Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them... And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man."

    Luke 2:51–52

    Composition of Place

Of Jesus's thirty-three years on earth, the Gospels give us almost nothing about thirty of them. He was born, presented in the temple, found teaching at twelve — and then: silence until the Jordan. What was he doing? Working wood, eating meals, keeping Sabbath, being a son and a neighbor.

    Points for Meditation

    The dignity of ordinary work

Jesus spent more of his earthly life as a carpenter than as a preacher. This is a theological statement. The ordinary human life — work, family, community, the repetition of daily tasks — is not a waiting room for the real life. It is the real life. God himself lived it for thirty years and called it good.

    Obedience to Mary and Joseph

The Creator of the universe was obedient to two human creatures. He who needed nothing was dependent on them for food and shelter and the formation of his human identity. This is not condescension — it is the logic of love. Love makes itself available. Love accepts the constraints of relationship.

    Growing in wisdom

Luke says Jesus "grew in wisdom." The divine Word, taking human nature, entered it fully — including the experience of learning, of not-yet-knowing, of gradual understanding. He did not shortcut the human process. He honored it by living it. Whatever you are learning slowly and imperfectly, He knows that experience from the inside.

    Colloquy

Ask Jesus to sanctify your ordinary life — the work you find repetitive, the relationships you find difficult, the unremarkable days that make up most of your life. Ask for the grace to be faithful in small things, trusting that the hidden life is not less holy than the public one.

Remain in silence for a few minutes.

Do not rush to the next exercise.
