Exercises/Week Two/The Call of the Disciples

    Day 5

    The Call of the Disciples

He called and they left everything

    Grace to ask for

Lord, let me hear Your call clearly — and give me the grace to respond without calculation.

""Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will send you out to fish for people." At once they left their nets and followed him."

    Mark 1:17–18

    Composition of Place

Stand on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. See the ordinary scene: men working, boats, nets, the smell of fish. Hear the voice of a man who has never fished in his life telling fishermen to follow him.

    Points for Meditation

    "At once"

The Gospel of Mark uses "immediately" constantly. At once they left their nets. At once they followed. This is not impulsiveness — it is recognition. When you encounter the one you were made for, the response is not a calculation. It is a homecoming. Have you ever had an experience of that kind of recognition?

    What they left

They left nets, boats, a father. These are not small things. This is livelihood, inheritance, family. The call of Jesus is not an addition to life — it is a reorganization of it. He asks for the center, and everything else finds its proper place around that center. Where is He asking for the center of yours?

    He called ordinary people

Not priests, not scholars, not the powerful. Fishermen, a tax collector, a zealot. His first community was not impressive. This is not incidental — it is deliberate. He forms His people from what is available. He is forming you from what you are, not what you wish you were.

    Colloquy

Ask for the grace of simplicity in responding to God's call. Ask to recognize your own call — not the generic call to holiness, but the specific shape of what God is asking of you, in your life, in your circumstances, now.

Remain in silence for a few minutes.

Do not rush to the next exercise.
