St. Cyril of Jerusalem
Patron of catechists
Saint Cyril (c. 313–386), bishop of Jerusalem during the Arian crisis, was three times exiled by Arian emperors and three times restored. His Catechetical Lectures, delivered to the candidates for baptism in the church of the Holy Sepulchre, are the oldest complete catechumenate we possess: they walk us, week by week through Lent and the Easter octave, through the creed, the sacraments and the mystagogy of the newly baptized. Few documents bring us so close to the worshipping life of the fourth-century Church. Leo XIII declared him a Doctor of the Church in 1882.
