St. John Henry Newman (1801–1890) was an English priest, writer and cardinal whose search for the truth led him from the Church of England into the Catholic Church. Born in London, he became a fellow of Oriel College, Oxford, and the vicar of the university church. In the 1830s he was a leader of the Oxford Movement, which called the Church of England back to its ancient roots.
His study of the early Church convinced him that the fullness of that faith lived on in the Catholic Church. On October 9, 1845, he was received into it at Littlemore by Blessed Dominic Barberi, at great personal cost to his friendships and career. Ordained a Catholic priest in 1847, he founded the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in Birmingham and served as first rector of the Catholic University of Ireland. His books, including "The Idea of a University," "Apologia Pro Vita Sua" and the "Grammar of Assent," are still widely read. He also wrote the hymn "Lead, Kindly Light."
Pope Leo XIII made him a cardinal in 1879; his motto was "Heart speaks to heart." He was canonized in 2019. On November 1, 2025, Pope Leo XIV declared him a Doctor of the Church and co-patron of Catholic education, and in 2026 his optional memorial was added to the calendar of the whole Church on October 9, the day of his reception.
