St. Elizabeth of Hungary
1207 – 1231
Patron of bakers, Secular Franciscans, charities, hospitals
Saint Elizabeth of Hungary (1207–1231) was the daughter of the King of Hungary. As was the custom, she was promised in marriage as a small child and sent to be raised at the court of Thuringia, in Germany. At 14 she married Louis, who would become the ruler of Thuringia. Unusually for royal marriages of the time, theirs was a true love match, and they had three children.
