St. Turibius of Mogrovejo
1538 – 1606
Patron of Latin American bishops, Peru, native rights
Saint Turibius of Mogrovejo (1538–1606) was a Spanish lawyer and professor of law, not a priest, when King Philip II chose him to be Archbishop of Lima, in Peru. He protested that he was unworthy and that Church law forbade appointing a layman, but he was overruled. He was ordained, consecrated a bishop, and arrived in Lima in 1581.
