St. Anthony of Padua
1195 – 1231
Patron of lost things, lost people, the poor, travelers
Saint Anthony of Padua (1195–1231) was born Fernando Martins de Bulhões to a noble family in Lisbon, Portugal. He entered the Augustinian canons as a young man, devoting himself to Scripture, but was moved to join the new Order of Friars Minor after venerating the relics of five Franciscan protomartyrs slain in Morocco. Taking the name Anthony, he sailed for Africa to seek martyrdom, but illness drove his ship to Sicily, and Providence led him instead to Italy.
