St. Ambrose
d. 397
Patron of beekeepers, Milan, learners
Saint Ambrose (about 340–397) was a Roman governor, not a priest, when the people of Milan made him their bishop. In 374 the city's bishop died, and the election of a successor threatened to turn into a riot. Ambrose, as governor, went to keep the peace, and the crowd began to chant, "Ambrose for bishop!" He was not even baptized yet. Within a week he was baptized, ordained and consecrated bishop. The Church keeps his feast on December 7, the date of his consecration.
