St. Francis Xavier
1506 – 1552
Patron of missions, missionaries, Asia
Saint Francis Xavier (1506–1552) was born into a noble family in Navarre, in northern Spain, and went to study at the University of Paris with dreams of an academic career. There he shared a room with Ignatius of Loyola, who kept asking him, "What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul?" Francis gave his life to Christ, and in 1534 he was one of the first seven companions who founded the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits.
