Pope Saint Damasus I (about 305–384) led the Church from 366 to 384, in the decades after Christianity became legal in the Roman Empire. His election was bitterly contested: a rival faction elected another man, Ursinus, and the two sides fought violently in the streets of Rome. The conflict shadowed his early years as pope.
