St. Catherine of Siena
1347 – 1380
Patron of Italy, Europe, nurses, against fire
Saint Catherine of Siena (1347–1380) was the twenty-third of twenty-five children born to the wool dyer Jacopo Benincasa and his wife Lapa in the Tuscan city of Siena. From the age of six she experienced mystical visions, and at sixteen she joined the Mantellate, the lay Dominican Third Order, living for three years in a tiny cell in her family home, leaving it only to attend Mass and confession.
