Day 6
The Crucifixion
"It is finished"

17th century
Grace to ask for
Lord, let the cross be not merely a fact I assent to but a reality I live inside.
"When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." And he bowed his head and gave up his spirit."
John 19:30
Composition of Place
Stand at the foot of the cross with Mary, with John, with the women who did not flee. This is the moment. Do not look away.
Points for Meditation
The seven last words
"Father, forgive them" — love persisting through betrayal. "Today you will be with me in paradise" — mercy to the very end. "Behold your mother" — care for those left behind. "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me" — the cry of desolation, Psalm 22 on his lips. "I thirst" — the physical reality. "It is finished" — the completion of the mission. "Into your hands I commend my spirit" — the final surrender.
"It is finished"
Not "I am finished" — "It is finished." Tetelestai in Greek: the word used to stamp a paid bill. The debt is paid. What week one called sin, week three calls paid. Not explained, not excused, not minimized — paid. By love, through suffering, at enormous cost.
The silence after
The veil of the temple tore. The earth shook. The centurion said: "Truly this was the Son of God." And then: silence. His mother at the foot of the cross. His friends scattered. The world going on as if nothing had happened — except that everything had happened. Everything that matters had just happened.
Colloquy
Stay at the cross. Do not rush to the resurrection. Holy Saturday exists for a reason. Ask for the grace to remain in the places where God seems absent — in the silence, in the waiting, in the dark — trusting that He has not abandoned you, even when He cannot be heard.
Remain in silence for a few minutes.
Do not rush to the next exercise.
